Volcano Mahameru Eruption in Indonesia Triggers Evacuations
Indonesia's Semeru volcano, the highest peak on the island of Java, has exploded, blanketing multiple communities with falling ash, prompting evacuations and causing officials to elevate the alert to the maximum level.
The volcano in East Java province unleashed searing clouds of fiery ash and a mixture of rock, lava and gas that travelled up to 4 miles down its slopes several times from midday to evening, while a dense plume of fiery clouds rose 1.2 miles into the air, as stated by Indonesia’s Geology Agency.
The outbursts that unfolded throughout the day compelled officials to raise the mountain's warning status on two occasions, from the third-highest level to the highest, the agency reported. No casualties have been announced.
Over three hundred inhabitants in the three villages most endangered in the district of Lumajang were relocated to government shelters, according to a representative for the national disaster mitigation agency.
He stated that heightened volcanic movements of the mountain on Wednesday afternoon prompted officials to expand the hazard area to 8km from the crater. People were urged to stay clear from an zone along the Besuk Kobokan River, which is the path of the molten rock stream, as scorching gases flowed down the volcano's sides.
Videos on social media displayed a thick plume of volcanic dust sweeping through a wooded ravine to a river beneath a bridge. Residents, some with faces smeared with volcanic dust and rain, escaped to makeshift refuges or departed for other safe areas.
Regional news outlets indicated that authorities were struggling to rescue about 178 individuals stranded on the 12,060-foot mountain at the Ranu Kumbolo observation station. The group included 137 climbers, 15 porters, seven escorts and six tourism officials, according to an spokesperson with the protected area.
“They remain secure at the Ranu Kumbolo station,” a spokesperson stated in a recorded message. He noted the station was situated 2.8 miles from the crater on the north side of the mountain, which is outside the trajectory of the hot cloud flow that was observed traveling to the southeast direction. Inclement conditions and precipitation required the team to spend the night there, he added.
The volcano, also known as Mahameru, has burst numerous times in the last two centuries. Still, as is the situation with numerous of the 129 active volcanoes in Indonesia, thousands of residents still to live on its fertile slopes.
Semeru’s previous significant explosion was in late 2021, when 51 individuals were lost their lives and hundreds others were burned and settlements were submerged in thick mud. The eruption forced the evacuation of more than 10,000 people from their homes.
The country, an archipelago of more than 280 million inhabitants, is located along the Pacific seismic belt, a curved series of fault lines, and is susceptible to seismic events and volcanic activity.
