Russell Wilson Responds at Former Coach Sean Payton Over Jaxson Dart Remarks

NY Giants signal-caller Russell Wilson did not hold back on online platforms this Tuesday, reacting to recent criticism from his former coach Sean Payton.

"Classless... but not shocked...," Wilson declared on X. "Had no idea you're still offering rewards 15+ years later through the media."

Wilson's response directly referenced the notorious Bounty Gate controversy from 2009 to 2011, when Payton led the New Orleans Saints.

At that time, the league determined that the Saints had incentivized players for delivering aggressive tackles on rival teams. As a result, Payton received a suspension from the league for a full year.

What Sparked the Recent Exchange

Wilson's response came after Payton delivered remarks following Denver's remarkable comeback victory over the New York. Payton suggested that the team had "found a little spark" with Jaxson Dart, who has replaced Wilson as the first-string QB.

Moreover, Payton hinted that he had informed team owner John Mara that he would prefer playing against Wilson instead of Dart.

"I was talking to John Mara not too long ago and I said, 'We hoped that change would've happened well after our game,'" Payton commented.

Background of the Coach-QB Relationship

  • The quarterback joined the Denver from the Seahawks in 2022 and signed a 5-year, $245M extension.
  • The Broncos went 4 wins and 11 losses in his debut year before Denver brought in Payton, who was returning to the sidelines after a stint in broadcasting.
  • Payton benched Wilson late into the 2023 season, a decision that ensured the quarterback from getting injured.

Had Wilson stayed on the roster by March 2024, his $37 million salary for 2025 would have been guaranteed. In the end, Wilson was let go, ending the contentious breakup between the quarterback and his coach.
