Three members of law enforcement were killed and at least 15 additional individuals got wounded in a seemingly deliberate gas explosion at a farmhouse in northern Italy.

How It Happened

The explosion was triggered as officers and emergency crews entered the house close to the Verona region to carry out an court-ordered eviction for two brothers and a sister aged in their 50s and 60s.

Each of the three victims who died belonged to the Carabinieri military police.

Legal Proceedings

Two individuals were arrested at the scene and a third person who fled following the incident was apprehended soon after. The trio have been taken to the hospital.

The explosion could be audible approximately 5 kilometers away and footage from the area revealed the property reduced to a mass of wreckage.

“This moment calls for sorrow,” said the Minister of the Interior Minister Piantedosi, who noted that attempts had been made to displace the three siblings in the previous occasions.

Financial Context

The head of the Veneto area, Luca Zaia, explained the residence was subject to an court order due to unpaid amounts accrued by the three owners.

Negotiators had been assigned to speak to the family members who had secured themselves into the home. When the police reached the location shortly after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), authorities suspect one of the residents triggered the detonation.

“When we entered the property, we faced an utterly insane act,” local police chief Commander Papagno told reporters.

A gas canister had been ignited, and the explosion immediately struck our officers,” he said.

Incendiary devices were also found at the residence, the minister confirmed.

Injuries and Destruction

The wounded by the incident comprised an additional 11 personnel of the police force as well as three members of the state police and a emergency responder.

According to the local prosecutor, the property was in a dilapidated shape and had lacked electrical service.

He was convinced the blast had taken place on a story above the entrance and stated to the press it was a “deliberate and pre-planned murder”. Moments before the explosion, he revealed personnel had “heard a whistle, probably the gas cylinders being activated”.

Community Reaction

“We all knew the situation was dire,” nearby inhabitants stated to local news, mentioning that the three had in the past stated to “detonate the property” rather than leave the house.

“The blast resulted in a ‘horrific, deeply distressing and tragic cost’.”

The Defense Minister Minister Crosetto joined other elected representatives in paying tribute to the three men who had lost their lives in the line of duty.
