Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Remarks

England opener Zak Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of comments made by captain Stokes about the team environment not being "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes made this message in multiple interviews in the wake of England's defeat in the second match of the Ashes versus the Australians earlier this month.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where the visitors now face defeat at the earliest opportunity, the captain stated he had let his sentiment to "drift around" within the squad.

"I've done all the talking in recent days that I required," said Stokes.

But, after Crawley scored a knock of 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take anything stated in the press with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

The captain issued his "fragile individuals" comment after England were beaten in Brisbane to fall two matches behind.

The England squad afterwards took a break to Noosa in the gap between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Prior to this match, he revealed his team had held "honest" conversations and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their effort to remain in contention in the series.

Yet, the Kent batsman asserted the messaging from the captain and head coach McCullum had remained in line with their prior three years in leadership.

"It's been extremely upbeat, the same as always," said Crawley. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. It felt like we could do an extraordinary feat entering this Test."

Australia Close of Rapid Series Victory

Crawley's wicket late on Saturday was part of a decisive triple-strike by Australia spinner Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in a short spell – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – left the chasing side six down for 207 in pursuit of a daunting total of 435 runs.

This means, Australia need just four more wickets on the final day to secure an unassailable 3-0 lead with three matches played.

Defeat would prolong the English team's winless run in this country to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth straight overseas Ashes series defeat.

This series is set to be decided in just eleven days of play – after England losing the first two Tests in rapid time each.

The last time 1921, when the Australians sealed victory in England in eight days, has the destination of the urn been decided so quickly. Australia have also won in eleven days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"It's disappointing," said Crawley. "We came here to regain the Ashes and we're facing elimination now."

"There remains plenty to play for and we will certainly approach it like that," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been difficult. They're a formidable side. It was inevitably tough touring here against them. They entered as the front-runners and have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Position In Question

While the opener's innings in the third Test likely secures questions about his short-term place in the England team, Ollie Pope appears under threat for his spot in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 runs in the team's second knock on day four, extending his modest returns versus the old enemy.

In 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has never made a fifty and averages 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has featured as many times in the top six in the Ashes and returned a lower average.

But, Crawley said any notion Pope is under the microscope originates with "the media" – referring to the press – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," said Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year to be frank."

"He has played some really good knocks. It is noise from the outside. There's no chat like that on Ollie in the camp," he concluded.
